Bikes in Music Videos

Bicycles have had quite an influence on music, some musicians even wrote lyrics to honour them. Here are a few of our favourite music videos where bikes had a cameo role/roll (haha). Please note, this is not an exhaustive list - just a few dandy faves.

The Smiths - Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before

This is super retro. Big hair and (probably) big attitudes. Also it may be about a bicycle gang, as everyone in the video wears similar jeans jackets, haircuts and glasses. The leader has a great bike with a wicker basket attached to the front, making this video a definite design inspo.

Bat For Lashes - What's A Girl To Do?

Okay, not going to lie. Super creepy song. Super creepy video. I actually have little to no idea what it is exactly that she's singing about. Her heart is growing colder though, and so is mine from watching those people in animal costumes creep up behind her on their bikes. This reminds me of the time our editor-in-chief Tammy suggested wearing salmon costumes while “salmoning” down a bike lane for bike-to-work day. In retrospect (and after having viewed this video) it probably worked out for the best that that idea didn't pan out.

Fatlip - What's Up Fatlip?

Why does there have to be clown?

Lily Allen - LDN

Cute bike and cute song. Basically she's singing about the pros of getting your drivers license revoked and seeing the city in a new light via bicycle. Some of the scenes of her riding through narrow streets between precariously parked cars and moving vehicles might give the odd tinge of anxiety, but the happy tunes will overcome those – hopefully.

Gin and juice - Snoop Doggy Dogg

There's so much that's good about this video. In all honesty though, without the bicycle scene it just wouldn't be as good as it is with it. That setup seems to be the bicycle equivalent of having a chauffeur. Who is that man driving Snoop Dogg around on the bicycle? I couldn't find a less pixellated video and it's been bugging me.

Sesame Street – “Ride A Bike!”

This isn't “technically” a music video, but it's Sesame Street! Who can complain about Sesame Street? Especially when it promotes such a wonderful healthy activity such as cycling through an extremely obnoxious and repetitive song. Also the kid at the 25 second mark is my hero.

Today's blog was brought to you by the letter B - bike for bikes.

We'll finish with these two classic videos - with bikes in the starring role:

Trunk Boyz' Scraper Bike is so catchy. And what an interesting phenomenon, these scraper bikes. PS Trike love!

And the 2012 hit Motherfucking Bike is also catchy. "Every day I ride the Tour de Fuck You." Charming!
