Norwegian electronic pop star Sandra Kolstad played a casual set at the back of Moog Audio on Queen West last night – the second of three Canadian Music Week showcases for the singer and keyboardist.

Backed by drummer Kyrre Bjørkås (who plays standing up) and skweee producer Sprutbass on bass synths, Kolstad played a gripping half-hour set for an intimate crowd that was divided on either side of a row of shelves housing keyboards and turntables, which runs down the middle of Moog’s floor.

The set list included songs from her new album (Nothing Lasts) Forever, like the infectious and pulsing “The Well (We will Change it all)”, as well as older material with just as much electro-pop danceability like (“Fire Burn, Blood Flow”).

Kolstad and her band opened with “Run Away (Where Are We?)”, the video for which culminates in Kolstad cycling through the Norwegian countryside and walking into a lake (she’s naked throughout most of the video).

After the show, she told me that the lake is close to where she grew up.

“I learned to swim in that lake,” she says – although the day they shot the video, it was freezing cold outside.

Kolstad currently lives in Berlin, which she says is a great city for cycling. It's her preferred mode of transportation.

Sandra Kolstad plays again tonight at Hard Luck Bar, at 11 p.m., before continuing her North American tour with a show in Brooklyn.
