FWOD social bike group is hosting Toronto's first Women, Trans, and Femme identifying ONLY alley cat June 24.
What is FWOD? Friends With Out Drama
FWOD-Toronto runs a weekly bike ride. In operation since July 2016, they meet Tuesdays at 7 p.m. just inside the Trinity Bellwoods gates at Queen Street West and Strachan. It's is a social bike ride for women, trans, and femme identifying riders only. It's a 'no-drop' ride meaning they all stay together and go at a leisurely pace. This ride is for all types of bikes and all skill levels, and rides are usually under 25 km with anywhere from 5-12 riders. They try to expose our riders to riding in groups, riding in traffic, and riding safely all while having fun.
FWOD is an acronym that was born in Oakland California, where Sam Bell wanted to escape the 'bro' hierarchy of cycling. They wanted to ride bikes with like minded folks, who would help them feel safe and included in the bike community. Fast forward to almost 10 years later and FWOD social bike chapters have started in cities such as Brooklyn, Denver, Louisville, Milwaukee, Chicago, and so many more. Last summer one of the Toronto organisers was on a vacation in Chicago, and was invited to the ride... and felt she had to bring it home.
Since then FWOD Toronto has forged its own way into the many sub-cultures of the bike scene here.
What is an Alley Cat?
Toronto's bike scene has many sub-cultures that are often exclusive and male-centric. One of the subcultures of riding bikes includes an unsanctioned type of race called an 'Alley Cat' born within bicycle courier culture as a way to go fast and show off to your friends for high stakes and useful prizes. These races have been historically dominated by the machismo aspect of cycling.
In the last couple of years we have noticed a change for the better within the bike scene in Toronto. Bike centred organisations are taking the lead in extinguishing the 'bro' culture within our community. Giving WTF (women, trans, femme) a place to ride their bikes, fix their bikes, talk about bikes, and race their bikes.
SO, IT'S TIME FOR TORONTO'S FIRST WTF-only ALLEY CAT!
FWOD-Toronto is hosting Toronto's first W.T.F. alley cat this Saturday.
