dandyCommute series: Vaughan Road and St. Clair Ave to the Annex
Describe your commute:
I work from home so I actually don't have a commute. Although I do try to bike most places I need to go. I go to the Annex often for various reasons, so for me that commute involves going from my place at Vaughan and St. Clair, straight down Bathurst Street. This is really easy and fun on the way down there since its all downhill and I barely need to pedal. Getting back home though is a different story. I go through the pleasant neighbourhood streets up until Dupont, then continue up Bathurst to Davenport, and when I get there the hill gets really steep so I usually get off and walk.
Why do you commute by bike?
I commute by bike for a number of reasons. It doesn't cost me anything. It's almost always faster than taking the TTC. I don't have to cram myself into packed subway cars. And finally, its good for your health!
What is the best part of your commute?
The best part is just the feeling of the speed, the wind in my face, zipping past cars, and swooping around corners.
What is the worst part of your commute?
Probably getting caught out in the rain. That sucks!
What is the most surprising part of your commute?
I love bumping into people I know when I'm out and about. It's nice to pull over and have an impromptu chat with someone you haven't seen in a while, and I could never do that if I was on the TTC.
What infrastructure change would make your commute better?
I would like to see more bike lanes! I was in Montreal and they have amazing infrastructure there. Almost every major street has bike lanes on both sides, and they have a lot of separated lanes too. If we could attain their level of infrastructure that would be great.
