Coldest Day Ride

Wednesday, January 30 wasn't exactly the "Coldest Day" -- it actually set records for being the warmest January 30 on record for Toronto (14 degrees Celsius in the morning). Nevertheless, there was a great turnout for Cycle Toronto's annual Coldest Day ride -- in fact, also record-setting.

"Few cyclists were wearing winter gear," says dandy writer Douglas Yardley. "We heard from Jared Kolb, Mike Layton, and Constable Tony Vella and we rode from City Hall to Metro Hall, where we socialized over hot chocolate and coffee. Some other City councillors, including Adam Vaughan, were there. Personally, I was glad to get in touch with Lucy Perri in Ward 37 about getting more members in Scarborough."

Jun Nogami, another dandy writer and blogger, adds that Layton announced that he would like an environmental assessment of bike lanes on Bloor to be put back in front of City Council. "He said that he had the support of Councillors Perks (ward 14), Vaughan (Ward 20), Wong-Tam (Ward 27), and McConnell (Ward 28), and he continued to work on getting support from the Humber River to the Don River," says Nogami. "Somewhat more surprising was the number of other councillors that showed up for the photo op, including Councillor Parker -- who had introduced the motion to take away the bike lanes on Jarvis. Perhaps bike lanes downtown are feeling a bit of a tailwind. At any rate, it is great to have a strongly pro-bicycling councillor like Mike to raise these issues at Council."
