Modrobes new location: Premium Goods Pop-Up Shop on Dupont, deals through December!
Story by Sarah Greene, photos by Sarah Greene and Lynn Moffatt
A few weeks ago I popped into Premium Goods Pop-Up Shop, a new storefront for Modrobes at 1611 Dupont (in the Junction Triangle, near Dupont and Edwin Ave.), to check out their locally-made bicycling-friendly Eucalyptex (recycled polyester and Eucalyptus) layers and pre-holiday deals on other brands (they also carry Salomon, Bonfire and Superdry).
Owner Steven Sal Debus started Modrobes in 1996, but shut down the business in 2001 after becoming more aware of human rights abuses overseas. He then re-launched the company in 2009 with support from Dragon's Den investors.
Modrobes was previously based at Queen and Bathurst and then at 163 Sterling Rd. before moving to the present location this November (they design the clothes in the back of the new storefront and manufacture the garments in Scarborough).
We dandies are particularly pumped about Modrobes’ own colourful Eucalyptex line of underwear, layers and accessories – good for staying warm while biking in the fall, winter and spring (pictured below).
Owner Steven Sal Debus demoed for me how to wear the NOOQ (a tube shaped head and neck warmer, pictured below).
And sales, events and marketing maven Lynn Moffatt showed off a cute longsleeve T-shirt and tights set for guys (below).
Moffatt wasn’t too forthcoming about prices, as deals will vary weekend to weekend. When I was there, however, Northface jackets were on sale 20-70% off, and there were good deals to be had on discontinued hoodies and yoga wear.
If you’re curious about Eucalyptex, Modrobes also has a Kickstarter campaign on the go called “The Smartest Shirt on the Planet” and you can watch the video about it over here. The company wants to do a full run of Eucalyptex T-shirts but needs a certain number of pre-orders to do so. (Pledges of $10 or more will be rewarded with deals on Eucalyptex goodies; the deadline is December 21).
I couldn’t resist trying on Modrobes riding jacket (in blue) before I left.
