The Season for Charity Bike Rides

'Tis the season for charity bike rides. With a plethora of worthy causes to choose from, cyclists
can quickly become bogged down by indecision. Do you Ride to Conquer Cancer? Do you Cycle
for Sight
? Here’s another ride to add to your list: the Zareinu Moveathon. The ride supports the
Toronto-based Zareinu Educational Centre, a small non-profit that provides affordable state-of-
the-art treatment for kids with special needs (and financial support for their families).

Now in its 14th year, the event is divided into two separate rides. On June 12 from 11-6, the kid-
friendly Zareinu Movethon Festival takes over a large chunk of Downsview Park with carnival
games, mechanical and inflatable rides, a Ferris wheel, petting zoo and prize raffles. The day
features a 2km walk, 5km and 10km runs, and a 20km family ride. Admission is free.

Looking for a bigger challenge? Whether you’re an experienced rider or new to two wheels, trek
over to nearby Milton on June 26. Choose from three routes: 50km, 100km and 162.5km, which
all wind through the scenic Niagara Escarpment. The event is designed with rider comfort in
mind, with support vans, showers, change rooms and toilets, and food and drink stands en route.
You can even get a post-ride massage for those tenderized calve muscles. Finish off the day by
grabbing some BBQ from Zareinu’s tent. You can get to Milton via the GO Train – and you can
bring your bike. To participate, you have to raise a minimum of $1,000 (one of the event’s top
fundraisers, grandfather David Sherman, has raised nearly $100,000 over 5 Moveathons).

“Cycling is easy to start and even easier to get hooked on,” said Lou Orzech, who first started
riding at Zareinu’s 2007 ride. “I worked my way up from the 50 km, to the 100 km and then the
162.5 km over three years and now I’m riding at least four times a week.”

So start flexing those hamstrings and get on your bike for a good cause.
